Sports Relief Project

Pyramid Project

The Sports Relief Project has been running since November 2006. It aims to resolve tension and conflict on the streets of Peterborough through the medium of sport, especially between young people from different backgrounds. The project is run in collaboration with Nacro, a crime reduction charity.

The aims of the project are for young people to:

  • Have an increased knowledge and understanding of different communities
  • Have more positive aspirations and attitudes
  • Reduce their involvement in anti-social behaviour

The project works within the Central Ward of Peterborough, focussing on young people from Gladstone and Westwood areas. Some young people from both these groups attend a local secondary school, The Voyager School, and are also actively engaged in the project. The young people involved come from Asian, Black and White communities.

The project works with young people individually to identify their problems and then to bring them together in their local areas to take part in a series of workshops. The workshops focus on conflict resolution, confidence building exercises and a variety of sporting opportunities including accredited qualifications. Over the course of the project rival groups of young people will be brought together to continue the conflict resolution work and some will become peer mentors.
